Of this anomalous plant, originally published by Prof. Harvey with doubt as a species of Xylosma, seeds were received last year from Prof. Macowan of Cape Town, which complete our knowledge of it, and confirm my original impression, noted upon Mr. Cooper's specimens received many years ago, that its affinity is rather with Monimiace than with either Flacourtiacea' or Euphorbiace, with which it has been hitherto associated. Its nearest ally known to me 2 is my genus Piplocalyx from New South Wales (vide Ie. PI. t. 2367). Whether Xymalos with Piplocalyx, and perhaps also Trimenia, should he separated from Jfonimiace and regarded as a natural order apart, I am not prepared to say. The leaves of Xymalos, though pellucidpunctate, are, in the dry state, quite destitute of the bitterness so intense in those long-dried of Piplocalyx. Dr. Warburg, in his review of the Flacourtiacc in Engler and Prantl's Natiirl. Pflanzenfamilim (Flacourtiaeeo?, 53), enumerates Xymalos, with certain other genera which he excludes from Flacourtiace, as either surviving members of groups now lost, or as belonging to other orders which only further investigation may determine.--D.
